Der Entwickler Valve hat eine Beta-Version der Online-Plattform Steam für Smartphones veröffentlicht. Besitzer eines iPhones oder eines Android-Handy können sich in den jeweiligen App-Stores eine kostenlose Beta-Version von Steam herunterladen.
Nach der Installation auf dem Mobilgerät müssen sich Benutzer mit ihrem Steam-Account anmelden, um sich direkt für die Closed Beta des Programms zu registrieren. Sobald die geschlossene Beta-Phase beginnt, können ausgewählte Benutzer den Dienst verwenden. Zwar wird man mit dieser App natürlich nicht spielen können, jedoch werde man unter anderem mit Freunden chatten, Community-Gruppen verwalten, Userprofile anschauen und Screenshots ansehen können. Außerdem können über die App auch Spiele gekauft werden.
Mitgründer und Chef von Valve Gabe Newell sagt dazu: »Viele Spieler haben diese Applikation verlangt«. Alle Features, die von der Community gefordert wurden habe man in dem Programm umgesetzt.
»Mobil zu sein verändert, wie Menschen miteinander kommunizieren, Spiele spielen und Medien konsumieren«, so Newell. Der Entwickler erhoffe sich durch dieses Programm, die Funktionalität zu verbessern und Steam somit noch reichhaltiger und zugänglicher zu machen.
