Intel produziert nicht nur Prozessoren für Desktop-PCs, Notebooks und Server sowie zahlreiche andere Halbleiterbauelemente, sondern auch Mainboards. Bei den Desktop-PC-Mainboards gehört Intel sogar zu den größeren Anbietern, allerdings mit Abstand zu den Marktführern Asus, Gigabyte, Asrock und MSI. Doch nun hat Intel entschieden, das Geschäft mit Desktop-PC-Mainboards im Laufe der kommenden drei Jahre aufzugeben.

Nur noch für die Mitte 2013 erwarteten Haswell-Prozessoren soll es von Intel entwickelte Desktop-PC-Mainboards geben, danach nur noch Support. Die Entwickler der Mainboards sollen für andere Abteilungen arbeiten. Die Entwicklung von Mainboards für Server und wohl auch die Embedded-Sparte (Atom-Boards) ist von der Entscheidung nicht betroffen.

Schon seit geraumer Zeit fertigt Intel wesentlich mehr Mobilprozessoren als welche für Desktop-PCs. Außerdem erobern Bauformen wie All-in-One-PCs oder Minicomputer immer größere Anteile am Desktop-PC-Markt, weshalb Mainboards in den klassischen ATX- oder Micro-ATX-Formaten an Bedeutung verlieren.

Intel-Mainboards sind vor allem in bestimmten Sparten erfolgreich, etwa jene mit Q-Chipsätzen für fernwartbare Bürocomputer. Viele kleinere PC-Hersteller und Systemhäuser offerieren flexible Build-to-Order-Konfigurationen auf der Basis von Intel-Mainboards.

Einzeln verkaufte Mainboards haben im Markt aber nur eine geringe Bedeutung, weil schätzungsweise mehr als 90 Prozent aller Desktop-Rechner als Komplettgeräte gekauft werden. Die führenden PC-Marken wie Lenovo, HP oder Dell entwickeln eigene Boards – oder lassen sie entwickeln – und lassen sie von großen Auftragsfertigern wie Pegatron oder Hon Hai/Foxconn herstellen. Diese wiederum fertigen auch für bekannte Mainboard-Marken oder bieten Mainboards unter eigenem Namen an oder über Tochterfirmen: Asrock beispielsweise gehört zur Firma Pegatron, die früher einmal eng mit Asus (Asustek) verknüpft war.
