Die US-Raumfahrtagentur NASA hat ein neues Selbstbild des Mars-Rovers Curiosity veröffentlicht. Das Bild zeigt den Rover im sogenannten "Rocknest", einer Formation im Gale-Krater, wo Curiosity vor kurzem mit der Analyse von Bodenproben begonnen hatte. Im Hintergrund ist der in der Mitte des Kraters gelegene Berg Aeolis Mons zu sehen, den die NASA auch als Mount Sharp bezeichnet.

Laut NASA wurde das Porträt aus 55 Thumbnails zusammengesetzt, die mit dem an einem Roboterarm befestigten "Mars Hand Lens Imager" (MAHLI) entstanden. Von den insgesamt 17 Kameras, mit denen Curiosity ausgestattet sei, könne nur MAHLI bestimmte Bereiche des Rovers ablichten, wie etwa die Räder auf der linken Seite. Die NASA-Ingenieure könnten anhand solcher Selbstbildnisse den Zustand des Rovers besser einschätzen, zum Beispiel ob sich Staub darauf angesammelt hat oder wie es um den Abnutzungsgrad der Räder steht.
