Der normale Support für Windows Vista, das am 30. Januar 2007 in den Handel kam, läuft mit dem heutigen Tag ab. Ab morgen wird Microsoft kostenlose Updates für das Betriebssystem nur noch dann veröffentlichen, wenn dies für die Sicherheit des Betriebssystems notwendig ist.

Zwar kann es auch noch andere Updates oder Hotfixes für Windows Vista geben, die Funktionen verbessern oder nicht sicherheitsrelevante Probleme beheben, diese werden aber nur für Kunden bereitgestellt, die einen kostenpflichtige Support-Vereinbarung mit Microsoft abschließen.

Die kostenlosen Sicherheits-Updates und auch den kostenpflichtigen »Extended Support« wird es noch bis zum 11. April 2017 geben. Trotzdem empfiehlt Microsoft Nutzern von Windows Vista den Umstieg auf den Nachfolger Windows 7. Den Verkauf von Windows Vista, das teilweise stark kritisiert wurde, hatte Microsoft ohnehin kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von Windows 7 im Oktober 2009 eingestellt.
