Was Strategy First und der neue Entwickler Team6 der einst ruhmreichen Rennspiel-Serie mit dem Machwerk Flatout 3 angetan haben, spottet jeder Beschreibung! Wir versuchen es trotzdem.

Zählen wir doch erst einmal ganz nüchtern die Fakten auf, bevor wir emotional werden: Bei Flatout 3 sitzen nicht mehr die finnischen Serienvätern und Zerstörungsexperten von Bugbear am Steuer, sondern die niederländischen Team 6 Game Studios, die sich hierzulande einen Namen mit Perlen wie Taxi Raser oder Call A Pizza Dude gemacht haben. Publisher des actionlastigen (!) Rennspiels (!!) ist Strategy First (!!!). Dass ein Flatout 3 überhaupt in Entwicklung ist, wurde erst eine Woche vor dem offiziellen Veröffentlichungstermin bekannt gegeben. Wir waren also durchaus misstrauisch und auf einiges gefasst. Dann haben wir angefangen zu spielen...

Steam-Pflicht
Flatout 3 gibt es glücklicherweise nur bei Steam und nicht im Laden. Durch die Kontobindung können Sie das Spiel aber dummerweise nicht zurückgeben, falls Sie es aus Versehen gekauft haben sollten.

Glorreiche Vergangenheit

So, jetzt können wir emotional werden: Haben die Schöpfer dieses Machwerks eigentlich noch alle Latten im Zaun? Was uns hier für 30 Euro als dritter Teil einer ruhmreichen Rennspiel-Serie verkauft werden soll, ist ein respektloser Schlag ins Gesicht jedes Flatout-Fans.

Wir erinnern uns: Die Vorgänger Flatout 2 und Flatout: Ultimate Carnage genießen deshalb Kultstatus, weil sie knallharte Tür-an-Tür-Duelle mit einer komplett zerstörbaren Streckenumgebung kombinierten. Je mehr wir demolierten und randalierten, desto mehr Boost konnten wir sammeln, was die Rennen trotz aller Action erstaunlich taktisch machte - zumal sich durch unsere Abrissarbeiten auch ständig die Ideallinie änderte. Dazu gab's die Komplettbedienung an Spielmodi vom einfachen Rennen bis zum Destruction Derby, zusammengehalten von einer motivierenden Karriere mit Preisgeldern und Tuning. Das Sahnehäubchen waren die aberwitzigen Stunt-Minispiele, in denen wir Crash Test Dummies durch unsere Windschutzscheibe in Basketballkörbe oder Fußballtore schleuderten.

Traurige Gegenwart

Warum wir so in der Vergangenheit schwelgen? Weil die Gegenwart so unfassbar traurig ist! Auf der verzweifelten Suche nach einer motivierenden Karriere stoßen wir lediglich auf einen so genannten Challenge-Modus, der uns vollkommen linear und ohne jegliche Wahlmöglichkeiten durch 50 scheinbar willkürlich zusammengewürfelte Aufgaben prügelt.

Das Unfassbare: Weiter geht es nur, wenn wir die gestellte Mission perfekt erfüllen, also in einem Rennen mit 16 Teilnehmern erster werden oder beim Stunt die Maximalpunktzahl erreichen. Wenn es uns in der letzten Kurve von der Ziellinie zerbröselt, heißt das »Pech gehabt, nochmal von vorn anfangen«. Fehlt nur noch höhnisches Gelächter aus den Lautsprechern.

Die völlig übertriebenen Verwischeffekte suggerieren eher Trunkenheit am Steuer als ein Geschwindigkeitsgefühl.

Apropos Hohn: Von den zehn Challenges, durch die wir uns zum Wohle dieses Tests gequält haben, war die erste -- ein Rennen auf einer Strecke namens »Karpatische Holzfäller« -- mit Abstand die schwerste. Ein Glück, dass wir einmal absolvierte Aufgaben nicht mehr wiederholen dürfen! Ach, und freigeschaltet wird natürlich auch nichts. Das geht nämlich nur über die Einzelrennen. Wahrscheinlich weil wir hier ausnahmsweise Gegnerzahl und Schwierigkeitsgrad festlegen dürfen und somit theoretisch bessere Siegchancen haben. Dachten wir zumindest...

Das Fahrverhalten : Wie Seife in der Badewanne

Also Gegnerzahl auf vier gesetzt, den niedrigsten Schwierigkeitsgrad gewählt und ab auf die Strecke! Hilft alles nichts, Flatout 3 bleibt ein Fall für Masochisten. Weil die computergesteuerten Piloten mit der Intelligenz eines Weißbrots und der Aggressivität eines tollwütigen Bullterriers fahren. Weil die Kurse mehr Ecken und Kanten haben als der Kölner Dom und ungefähr so übersichtlich sind wie die Innenstadt von Tokio. Und weil das Fahrverhalten mehr an ein nasses Stück Seife in der Badewanne erinnert als einen Hightech-Sportwagen.

Wer das programmiert hat, kann niemals in einem echten Auto gesessen haben. Gezieltes Manövrieren ist wegen der augenfeindlichsten Verwischeffekte der Rennspielgeschichte aber ohnehin nur in Ausnahmefällen möglich. Offenbar wollten die Entwickler kein Geschwindigkeitsgefühl simulieren, sondern einen Vollrausch mit 2,5 Promille. Zumindest das ist ihnen eindrucksvoll gelungen.

Tuning per Text

Ja, auch in den Vorgängern gab es viel Chaos auf der Strecke. Aber es blieb es stets beherrsch- und vor allem nachvollziehbar. In Flatout 3 ist es dagegen bei neun von zehn Fällen nicht unser Fehler, wenn es uns zersägt, was gefühlt alle fünf bis zehn Sekunden passiert. Immerhin dürfen wir unsere zerbeulten Flitzer von Geisterhand wieder reparieren (die Schadensanzeige heißt im Spiel übrigens »Health«), indem wir Boost einsetzen. Kein Scherz!

Fazit der Redaktion

Heiko Klinge: Der Untertitel von Flatout 3 lautet »Chaos & Destruction«. Durchaus passend: Diese Frechheit löste in mir bislang eine ungeahnte Zerstörungswut aus. Und nachdem ich mein Gamepad zum 27. Mal quer durchs Arbeitszimmer gefeuert hatte, sah es dort zugegebenermaßen auch ziemlich chaotisch aus. Der Untertitel bleibt jedoch das einzige Versprechen, das Flatout 3 einlöst -- der Rest ist blanker Etikettenschwindel. Hier wird auf dreisteste Art versucht, mit Hilfe eines bekannten Namen ein grottenschlechtes Rennspiel an unbedarfte Serienfans zu verticken. Das hat Flatout nicht verdient!
