Windows XP ist in dieser Woche nunmehr ein Jahrzehnt alt geworden: Am 24. August 2001 verkündete Microsoft, dass Windows XP den "RTM"-Status ("Release to Manufacturing") erreicht habe. Das neue Betriebssystem wurde an die PC-Hersteller ausgeliefert und auch die Produktion der Windows-XP-Installations-CDs konnte beginnen. In den Einzelhandel kam Windows XP dann am 25. Oktober 2001.
Den 10ten Geburtstag von Windows XP würdigte Microsoft in dieser Woche mit keinerlei Pressemitteilung, Blog-Einträgen oder ähnlichen Veröffentlichungen. Erst im vergangenen Monat hatte Microsoft seine Kunden dazu aufgefordert, Windows XP durch ein aktuelles Betriebssystem zu ersetzen und darauf hingewiesen, dass im April 2014 die Unterstützung für Windows XP SP3 enden wird.
Richtig beliebt wurde Windows XP ohnehin erst mit der Veröffentlichung des Service Pack 2 im August 2004. Microsoft fügte damals Windows XP mit dem zweiten Service Pack zahlreiche neue Funktionen hinzu und verbesserte auch die Sicherheit des Betriebssystems. So wurde mit dem SP2 die integrierte Firewall verbessert und standardmäßig eingeschaltet. Das neue Sicherheitscenter lieferte einen Überblick über den Status der installierten Sicherheitssoftware.
Im Juli war der Marktanteil von Windows XP erstmalig unter 50 Prozent gefallen, wie die Analysten von Net Applications meldeten. Der Marktanteil von Windows 7 lag Ende Juli bei 29,7 Prozent.
