Modern Warfare bietet zwar wieder Dedicated Server an, macht diese aber durch das fehlende Levelsystem unattraktiver als das Matchmaking.
Der Shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 wird zwar auf dem PC wieder Dedicated Server bieten, allerdings schließt Infinity Ward die Möglichkeit aus, auf diesen Servern Punkte für Levelaufstiege zu erspielen.

Wer mit seinem Charakter in den Rängern vorankommen will, um neue Waffen, Perks und Gegenstände freizuschalten, der muss auf das Matchmaking System des IWNets zurückgreifen. Das erklärt Creative Strategist Robert Bowling in einem Forumseintrag.

Modern Warfare 2 , das im Mehrspieler-Modus ausschließlich auf das IWNet setzt, sah sich in der PC-Version viel Kritik ausgesetzt, weil die Macher das eigentlich von den Konsolen stammende Matchmaking-System ohne Serverbrowser nutzen. Dabei stellt einer der Spieler (im Regelfall der mit der besten Internetverbindung) den Host, zu dem sich alle anderen verbinden. Das zwar zur Call-of-Duty-Reihe gehörende, aber von Treyarch entwickelte Black Ops hingegen organisierte den Multiplayer wieder klassisch über Dedicated Server.

Modern Warfare 3 schlägt nun einen Mischweg ein, der zwar Dedicated Server wieder zulässt, diese aber deutlich unattraktiver macht, weil hier die Möglichkeit zum Sammeln von Erfahrungspunkten fehlt. Das Fortschreiten in den Rängen mit dem Freischalten von neuen Belohnungen macht aber für viele Spieler einen Reiz des Mehrspieler-Modus aus. Die Sorge, dass dadurch die von Spielern aufgesetzten Server deutlich unbeliebter und folglich leerer sein werden, erscheint nicht ganz unbegründet.

Bowling versichert aber, dass die Admins dafür vollkommen freie Hand über die Regeln auf ihren Dedicated Servern haben. Sie können beispielsweise festlegen, welche Waffen erlaubt oder gesperrt sind oder ganz neue Spielmodi mit eigenen Regeln entwerfen.
